A DRL appears to be off — is the lamp faulty?

Not always.

The JAECOO 7 owner manual explains that the daytime running lights operate when the engine is started and the low beams, high beams and front fog lights are not switched on. The DRLs turn off automatically when the low beam, high beam or position lights are switched on.

This means a customer may believe a DRL has stopped working when the vehicle is simply operating under a different lighting mode.

Before ordering a replacement lamp, check:

• Whether both sides behave differently;

• Current headlight-switch position;

• Whether the low beam or position lights are on;

The phrase taillights (through-type) may appear in supplier records, but it is less natural for a customer-facing product title.

Possible reasons for replacement

A centre tailgate lamp can be affected by:

Outer tail lights are exposed to:

Not always.

Where the fault is internal to a sealed LED lamp and the light source is not separately serviceable, replacing the complete assembly may be the appropriate repair. However, replacing the lamp will not resolve a damaged connector, wiring fault or control-system issue.

Broken mounting tabs

Lamp mounting tabs can break even when the lens remains intact.

This frequently occurs when an impact moves the bumper, wing or tailgate into the lamp. The customer may initially ask only for the visible body panel, then discover the lamp damage after dismantling.

Before ordering, the workshop should inspect:

• Adjacent brackets;

Moisture and condensation

Light misting is not always evidence that a lamp is defective.
